The number of attractions and things to do in Chicago is uncountable in this Midwest city.
In addition to being one of the best American cities in which to watch sports, Chicago also boasts a terrific dining scene, a flourishing arts and culture scene, and proximity to the scenic Lake Michigan (and this is just for starters).
In the end, everyone can find something they like. If you’ve never been to Chicago before, regardless of your motivation for taking a trip, you’re in for a treat. And after that one visit, I knew I wanted to make this place my permanent home.

Do Visit Lake Michigan
One of the many things that make Chicago so unique is its location on the shores of Lake Michigan. In the winter, the lake partially freezes over, creating icy waves on the shore. During the summer, the lake is a welcome relief from the sweltering weather.
Do not miss the Lakefront Trail if you plan on visiting during the summer. In its 18 miles of the winding path around the city and the water, this paved trail provides breathtaking vistas and a relaxing escape. Everyone can use the path for free, and it’s perfect for biking, running, and walking.

Do Visit the Chicago River
Surprise! Even though it is surrounded by water on all sides, Chicago also has access to a river. The Chicago River cuts right through the middle of the city, beginning at the northwest edges of the Loop and continuing all the way to Lake Michigan.

Even though there are numerous bridges and vantage points from which to enjoy the river, I recommend doing so from the Chicago Riverwalk.
The 1.25-mile Riverwalk features six “coves” that are home to a variety of shops, restaurants, and entertainment options. If you visit during the warmer months, you can also go kayaking on the river.
Given Chicago’s rich architectural history, tours focusing on it along the river are another great way to see the city.
Millennium Park in Chicago
In the heart of the Loop, within the larger Grant Park, sits Millennium Park. This park, which is adjacent to Maggie Daley Park, is one of the city’s most recognizable destinations. Take part in events and enjoy a panoramic view of the cityscape from this location.
Cloud Gate, often known as “The Bean,” is the park’s most recognizable landmark.
However, taking a picture with the Bean isn’t the only thing to do in Millennium Park. The park and its public art, including the interactive multimedia installation Crown Fountain, are open all year round.
In the winter, you can go ice skating at the Bean or at the nearby Maggie Daley rink. In the summer, Chicago hosts many festivals and outdoor concerts. Popular events at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park include the Summer Music Series and the Chicago Blues Festival.
The Art Institute of Chicago
Approximately south of Millennium Park in the Loop is where you’ll find the Art Institute of Chicago. This world-class museum houses thousands of works of art spanning multiple cultures, centuries, and artistic disciplines.
Think about the art created by artists such as Van Gogh, Picasso, and Monet.
Spend at least a few hours wandering the Art Institute of Chicago. There are several sections and displays to see across the four stories of this old building. Anyone, including families, is welcome to visit the museum.
